Sacramento County Office of Education – Summer Youth Employment Program
The Sacramento County Office of Education working with the Fulton-El Camino Recreation and Park District (FEC) has employed local youth to complete various park improvement projects at Howe Park over a six week period this summer. The goal of the program is to teach the youth a diverse set of work and life skills that will provide lasting benefits to them and to Howe Park. This program represents an enriching and inspiring opportunity for teens and young adults to gain work experience working under the guidance of adult supervision while achieving personal growth and fulfillment of serving their community.
The youth are organized into
project groups with Team Leaders. Some of the skills that the participants learn
include working in a team, problem solving, project planning and layout, site
preparation, forming, concrete mixing, pressure washing, sanding, and painting.
In conjunction with the realization of physical goals, the participants also
learn intangible goals, such as accountability, responsibility, camaraderie,
development of work ethic, increased self-esteem and the ability to work in a
diverse working group. The youths also develop a sense of place and respect for
the park in which they work. Overall this program offers community service,
enhancement to the participants, and enrichment for the community. Without this
sort of collaborative efforts, such needed improvements to FEC parks might not
be accomplished due to budget limitations.
